The Irurtia Vineyards and Winery was born with the arrival of the basque Don Lorenzo Irurtia to Cerro Carmelo during the first decade of the XIX century and continue, generation upon generation, in the art of making the best wines.
The good wine's passion and a lifetime dedicated to the care of grape cultivation bore a first vintage in summer 1913. From 1954 Dante Irurtia has promoted a strong evolution in the rythm of implantation of selected grapevines, aiming towards the production of high-quality wines; and in the late 60’s, after a massive importation of french clonal selected vines and stalks, the viticultural structure of our vineyards was fully reconverted.
This privileged area benefits from a microclimate produced by the joining of two grand masses of water coming from the North: the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. Those joining on the rivershores of Carmelo and later go on to conform the world-renowned Río de la Plata estuary.
The soils are well balanced, humiferous, and the sandy surface soils produced easy natural drainage. There is a subsoil of tertiary era: fossiliferous and sandy rock, very rich in phosphorous and potasium, where the vine extracts nutrients.
The vineyards are planted in hills of virgin land, natural environment, non polluted and in good biodiversity balance that we are proud to care, justifying the slogan of our country : « Uruguay, natural land »
